A multitude of fishing experiences and species are available to the angler, from rivers to flats to reef to off-shore fishing. Fishing guides are specialized tour guides and all coastal and island properties will have access to arranging fishing tours with them. Usually there are two persons to a boat and fishing charters provide the option for renting fishing equipment. Guides have recommendations as to the best type of lures for a particular catch.
Many of the rivers in Belize offer calm, productive sports fishing. Popular species are Tarpon, Snook, Cubera Snapper and Jewfish (a type of Grouper).
Fishing in the sea grass beds that lie between the coast and the reef for Bonefish, Permit and Tarpon is popular with fly fishermen, as well as with spin tackle anglers. Catching and landing one of each in one day earns the fisherman a coveted Grand Slam.
The variety of species that lives along the barrier reef provides for exciting reef fishing. Grouper, many varieties of Snapper, Jack Crevalle and Barracuda are all easily caught while reef fishing.
Deep Sea fishing or Blue water fishing
Species such as Tuna, Wahoo, Kingfish, Mackerel, Sailfish and Marlin are all caught in the off-shore waters of Belize. Sailfish and Marlin are not plentiful but they are caught regularly.
