Day 1: Arrive in Belize
You are personally greeted at the Belize International Airport by a representative of Adventures in
Belize. Your representative will direct you over to the local airline desk where you will board your
flight to Punta Gorda town. At the Punta Gorda airport you will be met by a representative of the
lodge who will drive you to the Sun Creek Lodge. Your accommodations are in a cabana with welcome
drinks. Dine tonight at the lodge.
Day 2: Full Day Maya Ruins Tour - Lubaantun and Nim Li
PUnit
Full Breakfast at the lodge. You will leave the lodge for a full day trip to the maya ruins of
Lubaantun and Nim Li Punit. Lubaantun is located about 25 miles from Punta Gorda town and about
1 1/2 miles from the village of San Pedro Columbia and is the largest maya site in Southern Belize.
It is well known for the unusual style of construction. All structures are made of limestone blocks
with no visible mortar biding them together. The strength of each structure lies in every hand-cut
stone, which was carefully measured and shaped to fit snugly next to each neighboring block. You can
enjoy a nice lunch and then go on to the maya ruins of Nim Li Punit. This site lies approximately 3
miles of the Southern Highway, near the villages of Indian Creek and GOlden Stream. Nim Li Punit is
one of the smaller maya sites, well known for the large amount of stele found there. Nim Li Punit
inherited it's name from a carving on the longest of the site's twenty-six stele, depicting a figure
wearing a large headdress. In the Maya Kekchi language, Nim Li Punit means "the big hat". Return to
the lodge in the late afternoon. Relax in one of the hammocks until dinner time. Dinner at the lodge.
Day 3: Full Day Maya Ruins Tour - Uxbenka and Rio Blanco
National Park
Full Breakfast at the lodge. You will leave the lodge for a full day trip to the maya ruins of
Uxbenka. The name - Uxbenka, translates as "ancient place", is an early classic ceremonial site.
The site is very small compared to Lubantuun or Nim Li Punit. This maya site perches on a ridge
overlooking the foothills and valleys of the Maya Mountains. The Blue Creek Canyon can be seen in
the distance. The ancient Maya practice of transforming hills by facing and terracing is particularly
striking here. Enjoy a delicious lunch and then head over to the Rio Blanco National Park which is
about 6 miles sough of San Antonio, just past the village of Santa Cruz. Declared a protected are in
1992, this 500-acre preserve has been designated an Indigenous Peoples Park - since it is managed and
controlled by the local village people from both Santa Elena and Santa Cruz. The Rio Blanco flows
through wide, shallow pools and gentle cascades formed of smooth slabs of mudstone and sandstone,
before pouring over a 15 foot ledge into a deep pool. A smooth stone ledge at the end of the trail
from the parking lot, covered with a layer of scattered snail shells, rises steeply about 20 feet
above the pool. This is a favorite jumping sport for local thrill seekers. Beware that the climb
back up is not as easy and the drop down. Return to the lodge in the late afternoon and dinner that
evening at the lodge.
Day 4: Full Day Canoe trip on the Rio Grand
Full Breakfast at the lodge. Your third day of adventure is a Canoe Trip along the Rio Grande.
Catch a glimpse of various bird species including the Montezuma's Oripendula, King Vulture, White-necked
Jacobin, Red footed Honeycreeper, Red-lored Parrot, Brown-headed Parrot and the Crimson-collared Tanager.
The Rio Grande is a brackish tidal river that drains from the Maya Mountains to the Gulf of Honduras.
Return later that day and relax before dinner that night at the lodge.
Day 5: Departure
Full Breakfast, check out and ground transfers from the lodge into town where you will be taken to the
Punta Gorda airstrip for your flight to your next Belize destination!
