About the Area Adventures in Belize: Book This Trip

Placencia Village is the jumping off point for all of our trips, located in Southern Belize on a narrow 13 mile long peninsula bordered by the Caribbean Sea, hosting some of the best beaches in Belize. Placencia is a small village where fishing meets tourism as the local source of income, feeling undiscovered and remains unspoiled by too many tourists.

A narrow sidewalk, famous as being the world's narrowest "street", runs down the center of the village and is bordered by colorful houses, small hotels and charming restaurants. It's a great place t unwind and get into "Belize Time".

Placencia is a great location from which to visit the rest of southern Belize. The Barrier Reef, archaeological sites, caves, rainforests, jungle rivers, national parks, Garifuna and Maya Villages are all available to visit on day trips out of Placencia. You may wish to add a few days to the end of your package trip to explore the area.

The Trip Summary

Journey into the deep southern region of Belize, where time seems to stand still. Traveling to Blue Creek, a Maya village nestled into the foothills of the Maya mountains, we hike the rainforest, swim into the underworld of Blue Creek Cave and share in the rich culture of the Maya. The following day we paddle into the depths of the jungle along Monkey River. Gliding through the forest we search out crocodiles, birds and the howler monkeys the river is named for.

Accommodations

The accommodations in Blue Creek are at a rustic guest house. There are flush toilets and cold showers. Along the river we will be camping in tents with sleeping mats and sheets. Bathing is done in the river and there is only a pit toilet for the one night along the river. We know it's rough, but pretend you are on Survivor!

Activity Level

Hiking in Blue Creek is moderate. Some hills. The kayaking is unsupported and we paddle approximately 4-6 hours daily in double inflatable kayaks. Some degree of fitness would be a plus for this tour.

Food

While in Blue Creek we eat at the homes of the local villagers. The meals mainly consist of rice, beans, homemade tortillas, some chicken. Maya style cooking. Along the river we will eat meals with the same staples.

Equipment

Tandem inflatable kayaks.

Blue Creek is a picturesque Maya village nestled in the foothills of the Maya Mountains. The region is marked by limestone/karsts formations which allow for the formation of numerous cave systems. They Maya in this area still live a simple traditional lifestyle in palm thatched houses and cooking over fire hearths. The afternoon will be spent exploring Blue Creek Cave. Caves were used by the ancient Maya for rituals and were the entry into the underworld of Xibalba. In Blue Creek Village we will stay in a simple guesthouse run by a Maya Family who are members of the Toledo Eco-tourism Association (TEA). Our meals will be prepared and shared with the local families who are members of the TEA, giving us first hand glimpse of the Maya way of life. Overnight in Blue Creek Village.
