Adventures in Belize: Book This Trip

Belize -- with a diversity of habitats making it home to over 500 species of colorful birds -- is a birder's paradise. Unusual birds such as the Jabiru Stork, the largest in the Western Hemisphere and with a height of 5 feet, can be found here. There is a healthy population of Jabiru Storks, and Roseate Spoonbills are on the increase. Other exciting and endangered species of birds include the Keel-billed Toucan, Blue-crowned Motmot, and the Orange-breasted Falcon. These falcons next in cliffs on high outcroppings in the Mount Pine Ridge, and on steep walls on the sinkholes. The Harpy Eagle, with a wingspan of 7 feet and height of 3 feet, making it the largest each in the world, has been seen soaring near the ruins of Caracole. Other interesting and/or threatened species includes Oscillated Turkey, Chestnut-bellied Heron, Solitary Eagle, and Crested Eagle.

The Caves Branch estate is a prime location to see both resident and migrating birds as well as many of the exotic animals of the area. Early morning and late afternoon are some of the best times for encounters of this type. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned birder, Caves Branch offers daily opportunities for viewing both local and transient bird populations. Many of the native Belizean birds are not found elsewhere in North America, so be prepared for a treat.

Bird treks occur early in the morning, as this is a time when most bird species are feeding or are moving to new locations, making it ideal for viewing. As the night sky lightens and the jungle comes to life, you start your walk down our 1km drive that shares three different and distinctive birding habitats. It is not unusual to spot over 100 species over a couple of mornings. These excursions are truly a feast for any birding enthusiast and allow you to sample what bird watching in Belize can be.

We are proud to offer Caves Branch to our guests as one of the most natural and exotic lodges in Belize.
